Description: A truely unique piece of history in the form of a simple pewter tankard with the well known glass bottom. The tankard was produced by James Edwards who worked out of Wilderness Street in London between 1800 and 1845. James Edwards' hallmarks are shown clearly to the left of the solid handle. The cup was purchased by Eton College and presented as a prize to a Master C. H. Rankin for winning the House Mile Handicap in 1889 at the age of 16. After Charles Herbert Rankin left Eton he joined the army and was serving in South Africa in 1990. His father was the Conservative MP, Sir James Rankin. Charles Rankin served in the army for most of his life and was promoted to Brigadier. He died in 1946. Dimensions Height: 95mm Base diameter: 80mm This item is in very good condition for its age with no major dents. The glass bottom is complete with no cracks or chips.
