Description: This is an antique, pre-WWI, "tin" from E.C. Rich, Inc., New York which previously contained 5 lbs. Rich's Crystallized Canton Ginger. It is older than the one the Smithsonian shares with the public. It is a rectangular steel container 8.5 in H x 7.25 in L x 4.25 in W. It weighs 14.1 oz Note: E.C. Rich, Inc. was founded in 1860 as an importer of crystallized ginger from China. They merged with Holway, Wright & Miner in 1881. Somewhere in between 1881-1885, Eleazer C. Rich replaced Miner, and the company was renamed to Holway, Wright & Rich. Holway left the partnership in 1885 and the company became Wright & Rich. Then in 1887, Wright retired, and the company reincorporated as E. C. Rich, Inc., which would be its name for the remainder of its existence. Based on branding and material this object was either created between 1860-1880 or 1887-1918. There are no records we can find to determine which period is accurate. This is a fantastic piece of antique advertising which would make a great addition to any antique advertising tin collection. This antique object will be packaged to survive the rigors of modern transportation and insured to the value paid.
