Subject: Plate: 'Castor and Pollux, or the Twins.' (Plate is accompanied by text in French, English, German and Dutch under image.) Disguised as a swan, Zeus visited Leda. She had two eggs from which one issued Pollux and Helen (immortal children of Zeus), and the other, Castor and Clytemnestra (the mortal children of Tyndareus). These twins were known as the Dioscuri and were semi-divine. Castor and Pollux formed a lifelong friendship. On an expedition against the Aphareids Castor was mortally wounded in battle.
