Sterling established his firm as “The Birmingham Organ Company” in Birmingham, CT in 1866. The firm was reorganized as “The Charles A. Sterling Organ Company” in 1871. In 1873, the firm moved to Derby, CT and the name of the firm was changed to “The Sterling Organ Company”.In 1885 the firm began manufacturing pianos, and the name of the firm was changed to “The Sterling Company”. The Sterling Company was hugely successful, and the firm built as many as 7,000 organs annually by 1887!The Sterling Company built several different piano names including Mendelssohn, Huntington, Goetz & Co., Richardson and Lohmann. After the Great Depression, Sterling merged with the Winter Piano Company, and the Sterling name was produced until the 1960s.
