Description: Antique framed maritime folk art, mixed media line and wash (pen and ink drawing / watercolor painting) of a late 19th century ocean liner - two masted sailing ship with one steam funnel. Fine detail work shows American flags flying from both masts, smoke billowing from funnel, figures of sailors on deck, life boats. Ocean waves may be drawn with pastels. Signature on back of frame reads Annie (A? G?) Knowles, 1884. She may have been an amateur artist married to sea captain William J. Knowles of Maryland. Label at top edge from Chas. R. Potter's Fine Art Store and Picture Frame Manufactory, Middletown, Connecticut. Black & gold painted frame with incised white garland pattern. Frame measures 12" x 14". Heavy wear to frame as shown in photos, light foxing. Artwork is not evenly aligned against backing. Sent to you from my smoke and pet free household in the US.
