Notes: Pelinna was an ancient greek town located on the left bank of the Peneius river and was an important town of Ancient Thessaly, in the district Histiaeotis. The town was situated between Trikka to the west and Pharkadon to the east. The city had a celebrated temple of Zeus Pelinnaeus. The city gained particular prominence in the fourth century BC through its alliance with Philip II of Macedon and was a place of some importance even in the time of Pindar. Alexander the Great passed through the town in his rapid march from Illyria to Boeotia. In the war between Antiochus III the Great and the Romans, in 191 BCE, Pelinna was occupied by the Athamanians, but was soon afterwards recovered by the Romans. There are considerable visible remains of the ancient town located at the modern city of Palaiogardíki. It is clear that Pelinna occupied the face of a rocky height, together with a large space at the foot of it on the south. The southern wall is more than half a mile in length, and the whole circumference near three miles. Among the ruins there are some well-preserved remains of towers and gates. Manto (Mantho) was a seeress and the daughter of Tiresias. Tiresias was himself a famous blind prophet of Apollo in Thebes, known for clairvoyance and for being transformed into a woman for seven years. Like other oracles, how Tiresias obtained his information varied: sometimes, he would receive visions; other times he would listen for the songs of birds, or ask for a description of visions and pictures appearing within the smoke of burnt offerings or entrails, and so interpret them. Pliny the Elder credited Tiresias with the invention of augury, the profecy from observing the flight of birds. On Mount Cyllene in the Peloponnese, Tiresias came upon a pair of copulating snakes and hit the pair with his stick. Hera punished Tiresias for this action by transforming him into a woman. As a woman, Tiresias became a priestess of Hera, married and had children, including daughter Manto, who also possessed the gift of prophecy. The name Manto derives from Ancient Greek Mantis for "seer, prophet". Some Excerpts from Head, Hist.
