Description: Audubon Scarlet Ibis, Octavo Later Edition, Plate 359 framed. This is an excellent 2nd or later Edition lithograph. These lithographs are from the 1850’s through 1870’s. There are often small marks on the paper with fading or yellowing over time. This particular lithograph is in excellent condition with virtually no flaws. This lithograph was obtained more than 10 years ago as part of a larger lot with a mix of 1st and later editions. The edition was not noted, and later editions can only typically be determined if the original book date is known. This is a beautiful piece for your wall. This is a hand-colored lithograph from John James Audubon's beautiful Octavo edition of his Birds of America. The Octavo lithographs that I sell are sourced from reputable dealers and are typically in very good to excellent condition as described individually. I frame lithographs with archival materials using the Gallery approach which means simple black metal frames (11x14 inches) with ivory or white matting. This emphasizes the beauty of the lithograph rather than the framing. There are many sources available to understand the history and Audubon’s Octavo lithographs https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_James_Audubon. I collect them because they are both beautiful on my walls and they represent nature at a time before industrialization. Audubon had his flaws, but he was an excellent artist. These pieces accurately represent the birds and show them in natural settings. Audubon spent two decades on this project, exploring the wilderness of America, gathering specimens, sketching birds, and documenting his observations. These original hand painted lithographs are only going to become rarer as time goes on. The 2nd (later) Octavo Edition Initially The Octavo edition was produced by Audubon as an affordable alternative to his original Havell Edition which was produced for Institutions. the 1st Octavo Edition, contains 500 hand-colored lithographs measuring approximately 6 ½” x 10 ¼”. Octavo Audubon prints were lithographed and hand-colored by the studio of J.T. Bowen in Philadelphia from 1839 to 1844. The 2nd (and later) Octavo edition of the Birds of America was published by Audubon’s son Victor Gifford in 1856. They can be differentiated from the 1st edition with a tinted background. As a result, they are sometime even more attractive than the first edition. These are also hand colored but with the addition of some chromolithography. It is difficult to identify exactly which edition was the source of any later print hence the term later edition. Condition This lithograph is in excellent condition. This lithograph has not been trimmed or altered and shows the original perforations from the original binding. Framing This original lithograph is newly framed (by me) using a black metal 11x14 inch frame. The mat and backing paper are conservation grade and made with lignin free stabilized materials and should last a lifetime. The lithographs are hung using small pieces of Filmoplast P 90 Plus. The glass is gallery grade OP-3 acrylic to protect against fading from UV radiation. This piece should not be placed in sunlight. LED lights on the other hand, tend to be UV free. Gallery framing of this nature is typically greater than $200. I do not profit from framing. Also note, it is easy to remove the lithograph from the frame if you wish to inspect the lithograph or change frames Shipping and Handling I ship using new boxes. The lithographs are well protected from shipping damage. I typically ship using the US postal Service ground method but can use other shippers and methods if the buyer chooses (and pays). Returns/Pricing I allow for returns within 30 days as long as the lithograph is returned in the original packaging. I strive to accurately describe these beautiful pieces of art. These lithographs are from the 1800’s (pre civil war) and as a result have had a long life associated with aging. I price my items well below typical retail prices, especially when considering the cost of archival framing. Some galleries will charge well over $300 for archival framing. I base the price on the edition, condition, comparable value, and my cost. My profit is slim. Comparable print only often sells for >$500.
