Description: AUSTRALIA 1913 4d Orange Kangaroo with WATERMARK shift. Mint stamp. Nice colour and the perfs are "fluffy" as often found for this issue. Watermark shift! What appears to be a horizontal bend (not crease) above the words "FOUR PENCE" actually appears to be a watermark line running across the stamp - and up, matching the frame (see image). There also appears to be part of another watermark as well as the expected large crown over A. Upon research: This would appear to indicate the stamp is from the lower left-hand bottom unit of the watermarked sheet. On the Australian 1st WMK, the watermarked page was divided up to allow each cliché to have a centred and full image of it. Human error appears to have led to the sheet being placed on the printing bed poorly and in so doing, has the outer limits of the watermark alignment frames now showing on the stamp unit. As a "WATERMARK SHIFT" this is a super example as it shows both the far left and very bottom limits. Th 4d was printed on 2 plates each of 120. An upper plate (1) - 1 left of 60 and a right of 60 (no monogram) and a lower plate (2) - a left of 60 and a right of 60 (with Monogram). The actual cliché number for this stamp would appear to be number 55, but is 1 of 4 possible. 1L55 - 1R55 - 2L55 - 2R55. There is some discoloration on the reverse and tips of some perfs, some of which is attributable to toning. No thins or tears. SG 4, Cat £120 as normal, but despite the condition, some premium for the watermark shift. Please review images.
