Description: I. History: a. The American Secretary 1960s: In the days before, copy machines, and computers on every desk, there were many secretaries. They worked for professional staff, other departmental staff, and in a secretarial pool. Their skills included: typing letters, telegrams, and cables, transcribing recorded correspondence from a Dictaphone or verbal from the manager, updating lists, adding to and sending case records. Secretaries were continually hired and trained as others moved on as their skills improved or managed other secretaries in a large setting. In the 1960s, a Secretary was considered a traditional women job. As a result, many secretaries left the workforce after marring. However, many returned in the 1970s after their children were old enough to take care of themselves. Secretaries, in general, were rated on speed and efficiency. For example, secretaries would take dictation from supervisors in shorthand and then take their notes to their desks and type it out. How fast the Secretary could take shorthand, and typing speed where the guides used in the era. In the late 1960s, typewriters became electric, and the typewriter arm was replaced with a typewriting ball that could back up and erase errors; this speeded up the secretaries work. Depending on the industry, Secretaries could take the knowledge gained and move into other key positions. An above-average secretary with five years' experience was already considered a key role. Unlike what you may see in the current T.V shows such as "Mad Men", more often, they were as valuable as Jane Hathaway in the "Beverly Hillbillies," pulling their bosses out of a jam. Many managers were only as good as their secretaries, and often junior managers would pick an older secretary to ensure success (if he was fortunate enough to get a seasoned secretary. b.
