Beautiful Antique 14K Gold Jet Pietra Dura Lily Of The Valley Mourning Pendant

Description: A lovely antique Victorian 14k gold pietra dura floral mourning pendant, dating to circa 1880. The Victorians admired lily of the valley and used to know it as the flower that brought happiness as its blooming meant Spring had finally arrived, the use of lily in the valley in mourning jewelry was also popular and this was reflected in another name given to this beautiful flower: ladder to heaven. This wonderful Victorian solid 14k gold pendant has an oval black jet plaque inlaid with green and white pietra dura tiles creating a gorgeous five-flower lily of the valley, some of the floral heads are raised which creates wonderful depth, the jet is framed in a heavy solid 14k yellow gold frame with lovely rope twist surround leading to a later added built in and hanging bail-a truly wonderful pendant! The bail is marked '14K', both the bail and frame test for 14k gold. The pendant measures about 1 3/4 x 1 1/8 inches including the bail and is about 3/16 inch thick. The plaque alone measures about 1 5/16 x 15/16 inches. The bail will hold a chain up to about 3mm thick. The pendant weighs approximately 7.7 grams. The pendant is in general very good condition with overall wear including a few nicks to the edges of the raised flower heads. There are a couple of tiny tiles in the stalk missing.
