( ASSOCIATION OF SMALL COLLECTORS OF OLD SILVERASK ) MARKING OF THE BERNDORF METALWARE PLANT IN AUSTRIA:ALPACCA AND ALPACCA-SILVER II PRODUCTSIn my previous article published in Silver Magazine (see Bibliography), I did a detailed study of the hallmarks used for high quality silver-plated hollowware (with a three-layer silver coating of Alpacca alloy, the so-called Alpacca Silber I) produced by the Berndorf hardware factory . This article is devoted to a brief listing of hallmarks issued on products of lower quality, namely on products made from pure alpaca alloy, as well as on the basis of alpaca coated with a double layer of silver (the so-called Alpacca Silber II). The Alpacca alloy was developed in 1823 by the German chemist Dr. Ernst August Geithner (1783-1852). In appearance, it was very similar to silver, but much cheaper. Therefore, this new alloy was first called "Argentan". It consisted of 20% nickel, 55% copper and 25% zinc. The new silver-imitating alloy soon became very popular. Gebrueder Henninger (Henninger Bros.) proposed a similar alloy (5-30% nickel, 45-70% copper and 8-45% zinc with trace amounts of lead, tin and iron) which they called "Neusilber". Later, both Argentan and Neusilber were used under the brand name Alpacca (or Alpakka). The first Berndorf Alpacca Silber II was introduced around 1880 and was used for fifty (!) years until 1930. This marking was found on the bottom of a silver-plated teapot with a capacity of 30 ml. Inside the diamond with a vertical diagonal of 3.5 mm there are two inscriptions: "BMF" (with the letters "M" and "F" merged) and "ASII" (which means Alpacca Silber II) and the profile of a walking bear * Any items, things and accessories shown in the photographs are included only to demonstrate the product being sold and are not part of the listing unless otherwise noted *The photos show the actual products.
