Every year blue false indigo expands into a clump of more and more flowers. Following the flowers are attractive long-stemmed black pods which are highly desired in flower arrangements. Though extremely drought tolerant and often found on hard, rocky limestone soils because of its adaptability, blue false indigo is also found in rich woods, thickets, and along stream banks and makes its best growth under such favorable conditions. Attractive foliage has a faint “bloom” on it helping the plant conserve moisture, providing a bluish-green appearance to its clover-like leaves. A great contrast to other garden plants when not in flower. The plant juices turn purple on exposure to air and provided a fair substitute for true indigo and was used by Native Americans in making a blue dye. Native over a very wide range of the U.S. from the northern Midwest and eastern states to the southeast and northern Texas, but adaptable to almost any climate. Named Perennial Plant of the Year in 2010 because of its beauty, environmental tolerances, resistance to disease and insect damage including deer and rabbit, as well as being attractive to butterflies and hummingbirds—great for beds and boarders, cottage gardens, and native and formal gardens alike.
