Description: This rare coin features the profile of Bolivia's namesake liberator, Simon Bolivar. Born in 1783 of a wealthy creole family in Caracas, Venezuela, Bolivar began fighting for his country's independence in 1810, after seven years of Enlightenment studies in Europe. He led troops into battle against Spanish Royalist forces for eleven years—suffering many defeats along the way—until achieving success in 1821. Bolivar then turned his attention to greater Peru, achieving independence there and the declaration in 1825 of the new nation of Bolivia, which immediately named him President. He died of tuberculosis in 1830.
