Cucumbers don’t take well to transplanting, so either start them early in peat pots or sow them directly. When 2 or 3 leaves appear on each plant, cut off all but the strongest plant with a scissors. Boston Pickling Cucumbers are a favorite among home growers for its high yields of short, blocky cucumbers with solid, crisp flesh, that's absolutely perfect for pickling. This straight growing cuke has a very attractive, solid, dark green color, with thin skin, and full ends. While the name states that it's a pickling cucumber, which is true, it's also quite tasty in salads. The cukes are best picked between 3-6 inches, but bigger cukes do still stay mild and sweet and are great for making relish.
