Description: Old Bwa Wood Mask From The Democratic Republic of The Congo. A rare, but distinctive, "pongdudu" mask from the Bwa/Uele people. This type of mask was originally believed by anthropologists to be used in battle by the fiercest warrior but is now believed to be associated more with hunting. The exaggerated ears emphasize the acute hearing necessary for stalking prey in the forest or savannah of the Bwa homeland in northern DRC. It measures 13 x 9 x 4 inches and is decorated with black pigment.
