Stereoview mounted on dark yellow cardstock. "Mormon Train (?) the Platte River" in contemporary pen on the reverse. "No. 5" also in pen. Savage and Ottinger's back stamp. Light soiling and rubbing to the corners. Very good. C. R. Savage (1832-1909) was born in England. He went on to become one of the foremost landscape photographers of the American West, as well as a famous studio portrait photographer with a studio in Salt Lake City, Utah. Savage partnered with George Martin Ottinger in 1862. C. R. Savage is most famous for being one of the three photographers who captured the "Joining of the Rails" at Promontory Point. The Savage and Ottinger firm officially dissolved in 1870, and Savage went on to the Pioneer Art Gallery, and later the Art Bazaar. 1866 was the year that Savage undertook a "Photographic Tour" of the United States. Bradley W. Richards discusses the plains portion of this trip in "The Savage View: Charles Savage, Pioneer Mormon Photographer." He writes, "Charles took a number of photographs during this trip across the plains, despite the difficult conditions... At least twelve photographs are known to have been taken and later printed, although he may have taken several times that number."The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints records this image in their Church History Catalog. The carte-de-visite they list is part of a collection of views that Henry C. Parry obtained on trips to Utah in 1867 and 1868. History.nebraska.gov also records a carte-de-visite of this image. It is one of only three photographs held by the Nebraska Historical Society that show emigrants crossing the plains. According to the web site the image was taken near Fremont's Spring, in proximity to the present town on Hershey, Nebraska in Lincoln County.Bradley W. Richards quotes Savage on pp. 38-39 of his book: "With two span of mules and provisions for two months, I joined a Mormon train which left Nebraska City for Salt Lake about the 8th of July. As the Mormon trains are well armed and completely organized, I found it a great advantage, rather than attempt the trip alone..." A bit later Savage is quoted as writing, "We followed the old road after crossing the South Platte at Fremont's Springs, and kept up on the south side of the North Platte; there we found abundance of wild game, such as antelope, deer, prairie fowl, sage hens, &c.; from Ash Hollow on to Laramie the scenery increases in interest, and there are many fine subjects for the camera and pencil."An important image, taken during the later years of overland wagon travel, showing emigrants crossing the plains.
