Description: A very fine hand painted watercolor from Royal Academy painter Ernest William Christmas (1863-1918). This landscape composition depicts sand dunes under a lowering sky, sailboats on the ocean in the distance. As it is dated 1915, we know that Christmas was painting in the bay area at the time. Nice size, the image measures 14 1/2 x 21 1/2 inches and is signed by the artist in the lower left, E. W. Christmas and 1915. Painted on heavy watercolor board that shows overall mild and even age toning. The reverse has some old cellotape at the edges and vestiges of brown paper tape, otherwise excellent condition. It should frame up quite nicely. Ernest William Christmas (1863-1918) was born in Australia and studied art in Adelaide, Sydney and London. He painted widely in England, exhibiting in the early years of the century at the Royal Academy, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Glasglow Institute of Fine Arts and in the provinces. He moved to New Zealand, settling first in Wellington, then in Auckland, exhibiting his landscapes with the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts from 1905 to 1908. Christmas was elected to the Royal British Academy in 1909. Always searching for a dramatic landscape, he painted mountains and lakes in Argentina and Chile in the years 1910 and 11, and resided in the San Francisco Bay area in both 1900 and again in 1915 before embarking for Hawaii where he died in 1918. His work is represented in major New Zealand collections including the Turnball and Hocken Libaries.
