Description: Nos. L1-L4 were issued by the Suez Canal Co. for use on letters and printed matter carried between canal ports. Items addressed to further destinations required additional French or Egyptian postage. These issues were recognized officially by the French Consulate Offices at Port Said and Suez but not by the Egyptian Post Office which suppressed their use at the end of August 1868. Nos. L1-L4 exist with portions of the papermaker's watermark, "LA + F" (La Croix Freres)
