(from a total of 16). 8vo. Contemporary French quarter morocco over marbled boards, worn (see images), ownership stamps from various sources, various defects, the most egregious being some worming to the outside of the binding of the last volume (not affecting text or structural integrity). All the bindings are perfectly sound, and the texts are unspoiled. Very good. THIS IS THE LARGEST PUBLISHED COLLECTION OF SPANISH-AMERICAN AND PORTUGUESE-AMERICAN TREATISES, DATING FROM THE 16TH CENTURY TO THE EARLY 19TH CENTURY; AND OF THE LATIN AMERICAN REVOLUTION -- STILL INDESPENSIBLE; A MASSIVE WORK IN THE STUDY OF LATIN AMERICAN HISTORIOGRAPHY. Complete sets are virtually impossible to find in private ownership or on the market. Our set is substantially complete, containing 13 of the 16 volumes. According to Rare Book Hub, no complete set has ever appeared at auction (!)Among Latin American diplomats in Paris in the mid-nineteenth century, a debate arose about the history and future destiny of the nations of Spanish and Portuguese America, which prefigures the first modern international studies of Latin America. The Argentine Carlos Calvo (1822-1906) played an important role by compiling treaties and historical documents from the wars of independence in Latin American countries. Over time, Calvo became one of the most outstanding and widely-read internationalists in Europe, above all thanks to his heroic historical enterprises, which were widely circulated and influential for specialists on an international scale. Calvo and his assistants used mainly compilations of documents, monographs and primary sources that they located in the British Museum, the "Imperial Library" in Paris, and the General Archive of the Indies in Seville. Calvo was an able director of the compilation, combining the texts and treaties of both Spain and Portugal -- a novelty at that time which incorporated Brazil and Portugal into the Spanish-language literature on international relations. Collecting documents of the colonial era was only Calvo's first objective; a more ambitious goal was realized in the companion compilation of "Historical Annals of the Latin American Revolution."
