Description: A beautiful watercolour, attributed to the hand of the Scottish artist Alexander Macdonald (Born 1847). Depicted is the Castle Rock on a beautiful sunny Summer day. Castle Rock is a famous rock formation in Lynton, North Devon and often depicted by artists.Alexander Macdonald was first active in Rome where he executed several important statues. For instance statues of important people as John Hungerford Arkwright and Lord Cardigan, but also a statue of Venus and Cupid.Later on in his life he was known for his paintings and watercolours. He mainly painted portraits, for example Henry Strutt, 2nd Baron Belper of Belper. His watercolours depicted landscapes of the English countryside. At the website of Mutualart.com one can find more works by his hand. Search under Artists on his name 'Alexander Macdonald' and click on artworks (11). We think this work is painted in the beginning of the 20th century (1900-1920).This work was probably painted on site, en plein air. The two holes in the upper corners indicate this. With two pins the paper was attached to a board, so the artist could work on it. The work is in excellent condition, signed bottom center 'A. Macdonald'. The signature is somewhat faded, but still clearly recognizable, h. 247 mm. - w. 393 mm./ h. 9.72 inch.- w. 15.47 inch. The frame is in total h. 43,8 - 58,1 cm./ h. 17.24 inch - w. 22.87 inch. Behind double passepartout and glass and framed in a modern frame. The back of the artwork is preserved with new acid free materials. Because of the use of archival materials it is preserved for future generations. With a shipment we will put painterstape on the glass to strenghten the glass and to protect the artwork; this can easily be removed. The last photo is a vintage postcard; this is not included in the sale, but provides an image how the scene looked like at the time the artist painted the picture. The provenance is a private collection in Ontario, Canada. A nice work, ready to hang. We ship with Canada Post or UPS, both reliable shippers. We pack thoroughly. When the actual shipping costs are less, we will reimburse the customer. Works by his hand were sold at auction from 633 US$ (watercolour) up to 77.937 US$ (Sculpture).
