Description: Chamaedorea microspadix, or Hardy Bamboo Palm, is one of the best choices for a cold-hardy palm in the zone 8-11 landscape that you can find! In addition to its outstanding cold-hardiness (it can take temperatures into the mid-teens Fahrenheit, but it will need good siting and/or protection when the temps drop under 20F or so.) It's really quite a striking species, forming open clumps of tall, slender canes to about 10 feet tall. A native of Mexico, it also forms beautiful, bright reddish-orange berries in late fall. It's a dioecious species, however, meaning there are separate male and female plants. You'll need to have at least one of each sex to get berries. Chamaedorea seeds are among some of the easiest palm seeds to germinate. Just soak the seeds for 24 hours before getting ready to plant them, then you can either sow in a community pot and leave outside in the spring when the weather warms up, or you can sow in a box or baggie inside in a mix of peat/perlite and provide some bottom heat for them.
