It is now widely cultivated; often given as gifts during the Christmas/holiday season. General Description: Ornamental flowering cactus. Hardiness Zone: 9 to 12 – not frost hardy. Maintenance: Low Mature Height: 6 to 12 inches Mature Width: 12 to 24 inches Plant Details: Growth Habit: Arching, weeping, rounded. Leaf Structure: Leafless – instead they are comprised of flattened stem segments. Stem Structure: Green, flattened stem segments with scalloped edges. They are tear drop shaped with short hairs along the sides where the segments come together. Each stem segment grows up to 2 ½ inches long and ¾ inch wide. Bark Structure: N/A Soil Preference: Loam, Sand, Perlite. Likes well drained soil. Watering Preference: Dry to Medium. Sunlight Preference: Partial Shade – Dappled light is best as direct sunlight will cause brown spots and sun burn. Nut Production: N/A Main Use of Plant: Indoor: Primarily grown as an indoor houseplant. Works well in hanging baskets as the branches start to weep. Outdoor: Can be grown outdoors in rock gardens. It will need to be brought indoors if the temperatures get below 65° Blooming Methods: In mid-October, reduce watering (only water when the top inch of soil feels dry), stop fertilizing, keep in 50° to 65° temperatures, and maintain 12 to 14 hours of darkness (you can cover the plant with a dark cloth to achieve this if necessary). Fun Fact: This plant is an epiphyte, which means it grows on other plants, but is not a parasite. They are naturally found growing in the crevices of trees in the rain forests of Brazil. General Notes: Peak growth months are from April to September with temperatures ranging from 70° to 80°. Once buds set, they prefer 55° to 65° nighttime temperatures. Pruning should be done after plants are done flowering. We grow everything organically with a beneficial insect program. We do not use chemical fertilizers, pesticides or fungicides. We use a preventive program for pests with the use of Ladybugs, Green Lacewings, Praying Mantis, and Predatory Mites to battle soft bodied bugs and Nematodes in the soil to combat any soil dwelling pests.
