Before the war he and his brother started a bank. The brother agreed to stay home which allowed Beatty to join the army. Beatty then raised a company of soldiers which was attached to the 3rd Ohio infantry. The unit saw action first in the West Virginia campaigns early in the war before transferring to Kentucky. Beatty soon promoted to Colonel of the 3rd Ohio. The 3rd Ohio was in almost all the major actions of the 3rd Ohio in the Western theater of war. Colonel Beatty missed Shiloh. For gallantry at Murfreesboro Beatty was promoted Brigadier General. Shortly after he resigned from the army January 1864. Beatty resigned so that his brother could then enlist in the army.
