The unit sees much action in Virginia during the war. The officer is wounded during the large cavalry battle at Brandy Station just before Gettysburg. He is hit in the head by a spent ball, just a glancing shot. This wound takes him out of active service. In the Fall of 1864 he is sent to various military duties in Maryland and then Wisconsin Of interest is a section that talks about John Wilkes Booth. It appears the recovering officer lived in the same boarding house as Booth while he was recovering from his wounds. The two got to know each other and the officer is upset when he later learns the man was the assassin of Lincoln. It appears the soldier later gets seriously ill and after the war is headed home Soon after he dies in February 1866.
