Description: Claret Jug Silver Plate & Swirled Glass Antique German WMF Foundry Early 1880s Claret jugs such as the one on offer here were popular with the middle and upper classes as the preferred way to serve wine, instead of having factory-produced bottles of wine on the table. Produced by the Wurtemberg Metalware Factory in Germany, the sans serif WMF I/O mark on the bottom of the base indicates that this claret jug was produced between 1880 and 1886, just before Art Nouveau started in the late 1880s. After 1886, a four-letter mark WMFN, WMFB, or WMFM was used. I/O was particular to WMF silver plate. I/O indicates 1g of silver per 10 square cm of base metal. WMF silver plate was sold both domestically in Germany and in the export market.
