Description: This is a proposal to dig a coal shaft (mine) by a John S. Morrison to a Mr. H. P. Shumway, from Brazil Block Coal Co., (Brazil, Indiana). 1887. This letter describes all the work to be done, prices for doing it, etc. For Example "sink the shaft to the bottom of the coal for $15.00 pr. foot" This is a very detailed proposal for digging the shaft, cementing walls, kerbs?, jacks, etc. I have never seen this much detail in the quoted preparation of the coal mine. Unfortunately I don't know the meaning of all the terms used but can assure you this would be very useful in determining procedures for establishing an underground coal mine in the late 19th century.. 2 pages of data (front and back). Recipient of the quote, H. P. Shumway, is a known Nebraska individual with coal and Farm Machinery interests. No actual site for the mine is identified.
