Description: Dark Green Zucchini Summer Squash seeds produce a green squash variety with exceptionally high yields of flavorful zucchini. When this long green squash is mature it can be up to 8-10" in length! Dark Green Zucchini are preferred at this young and tender stage when they are excellent lightly steamed, sautéed, or stir-fried. They are ideal for multiple cooking dishes and baked goods such as cakes, breads and muffins. A summer squash, this green zucchini is a delight in the kitchen. During the "high season" of summer, unless you are checking your plants daily, the fruit size can get away from you very quickly! Medium sized to large fruit can still be cooked in the same way as previously noted, but since harvest occurs during "barbecue season," we like to quarter the zucchini lengthwise, and with the skin left on, coat them in olive oil, season to taste, and then grill them until tender but firm. Often our seasoning is simply fresh ground black pepper and salt, but experiment with herbs for fun flavor variations. Pick summer squash early and often, every 2-3 days at least if not daily. Not picking will stop the production of the plants. The squash are ready to harvest just after blossom falls from fruit and fruit can be easily dented with a thumbnail.Planting: Direct seeding is the easiest and most successful method of planting. Sow in late spring when soil is at least 70°F and danger of frost has passed. In a sunny location, sow a few seeds spaced evenly over a hill 9 to 12 inches tall and 2 feet across. When the plants are 3 inches tall, thin by cutting all but the 3 strongest seedlings per hill.
