Description: David Levinthal (b. 1949). Original 20x24 Polaroid from the Baseball Series 2003This edition noted on letter of authentication as (03-PC-BB-046). This piece is unsigned but includes a letter of authentication from David Levinthal Studio, signed by David Levinthal with recognition of provenance. I am the original and sole owner of the piece since its creation in 2003. I am very familiar with this type of Polaroid format because from 2001-2003 I was an assistant on the 20x24 Land Camera as well as a technician on the larger format Polaroid 40x80 camera in NYC.Condition:Since taking ownership, it was stored flat in an archival photo portfolio with glassine sleeves. It remained in this storage until 2008 when it was professionally framed edge to edge with no matte. When displayed in my residence's, it was never displayed in direct sunlight nor exposed to moisture or erratic humidity. From 2021-July 2024 it was stored in a climate controlled vault at Bonsai Fine Art, Atlanta.I am a professional fine arts Project Manager and art handler with over 8 years experience in writing condition reports for multiple museums in the Southeast as well as working with conservationists and curators. My experience in this field as well as my personal experience with this format and cameras concludes the following in it’s condition:Notes:There is very thin hairline cracking at the top of the print most likely due to the camera’s process of using rollers in the development of the image. The condition does not detract from the image and could be considered natural wear due to process and age. I would rate the piece as an A or 99/100 and is certainly museum worthy. There is no paper crack, broken corners, light damage, warping or curling. Framing:Wood frame dims: 29 5/8x23 3/8x2 1/8TruVue UV Museum acrylic with no scratches or clouding. There are no cracks or splinters in the framing, but there is slight discoloration on the back (paper edge) frame edges probably due to wall wear.Shipping:I will personally pack the piece using museum standard materials. Poly, archival tissue and shipped in a 5” depth strong box with foam cut to measure. BUYER PAYS SHIPPING. Via Media Mail, shipping estimate will be around $250-$275. If buyer wants to explore or estimate crating and shipping, I can work with them, but all costs in that regard will be paid by buyer. Interesting Notes about the artist and pieces: Nasher Museum of ArtDavid Levinthal: Baseball is a series of large-format Polaroid photographs that capture some of the most iconic moments in the history of baseball through Levinthal’s signature use of lifelike figurines. Babe Ruth’s called shot from game three of the 1932 World Series and Jackie Robinson stealing home in the 1955 World Series are among the moments rendered in the artist’s unique take on our national pastime.Publications:American photographer David Levinthal re-stages historical events using toy figures, play sets, and other miniatures—often to unsettling effects. “Ever since I began working with toys,” the artist explains, “I have been intrigued with the idea that these seemingly benign objects could take on such incredible power and personality simply by the way they were photographed.” Hitler Moves East (1977)—Levinthal’s first book of photographs, produced in collaboration with the cartoonist Gary Trudeau—blurs the line between fact and fiction, employing a photojournalistic style to capture toy soldiers in action. Levinthal’s other tableaus similarly draw upon the American psyche, whether depicting the American West, baseball players at bat, fantasies of the pin-up girl, or narrative scenes from Uncle Tom’s Cabin.
