Description: Dee O'Hara: Astronauts' NurseBy Virginia McDonnell, R.N. First Bookshop is pleased to offer up Dee O'Hara: Astronauts' Nurse, signed by Dee O'Hara and written by Virginia McDonnell. O'Hara signed the book on the half-title page. She included her title. This is an ex-library book. In Dee O'Hara: Astronauts' Nurse, it's one registered nurse -- Virginia McDonnell -- writing about another nurse -- Dee O'Hara. The book, published in 1965, was intended to excite young people about professional careers. Astronauts' Nurse ups the ante because every day, O'Hara treated America's new heroes -- astronauts Alan Shepard, John Glenn, Scott Carpenter, Walter Schirra, Gus Grissom, Gordon Cooper, and Donald "Deke" Slayton. In high school, O'Hara wasn't sure which career to pursue. She loved people and wanted to help. She selected nursing. As Astronauts' Nurse tells it, one day O'Hara was summoned to her colonel's office. She thought she would be reprimanded. Instead, O'Hara was told she would be the first aerospace nurse. For years afterward, O'Hara tended to the needs of the astronauts, from Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, and Apollo-Soyuz Test Project. McDonnell, the author, wrote Dee O'Hara: Astronauts' Nurse in the context and style of the early to mid-1960s. Careers as pilots, medical doctors, politicians and such were rare for American women. Women astronauts did not exist in the U.S. until Sally Ride in 1983, 20 years after Russian cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova was thrust into space. Dee O'Hara: Astronauts' Nurse is in good condition. This is a library book. There are several stamps in the book that have been blocked out and check-out glue at the back. Library stamps on the outside of the pages and writing taped on the spine. The corners of the book are worn, as well as the edges of the cover. No dust jacket. First Bookshop tries hard to enhance the value of our signed books. Astronauts' Nurse comes with an ironclad guarantee that Dee O'Hara's signature is authentic, or your money back. We include a photo of O'Hara signing for us in Tucson, Arizona, in June 2016.
