Description: Dianthus Chinensis chinese pink merry-go-round. Common names are: chinese pink, indian pink and carnation. Oddly, the word “pink” has nothing to do with the color. It is a description of the serrated edges having the appearance of being cut with “pinking shears”. The color on these flowers is very intense white with a red ring which is just a beautiful site when the plant blooms multiple flowers. Like others in their family they do well in soil with good drainage. They however differ in the way they are sensitive to drought and frost, faring better in temperate climates. They are excellent border flowers, in planting boxes, and beds. They are commonly used as ornamental decor. The Chinese herbalists have been using them for over 2,000 years in traditional chinese medicine. Even though they can be used to steep for tea with their clove-like taste, they are poisonous if eaten directly, even lethal. You can deadhead these plants if you choose to, or collect the numerous seeds for future planting.
