DJ Beatien Yazz SIGNED SPIN A SILVER DOLLAR Navajo Indian Native American Artist

Description: Title: Spin A Silver Dollar Author: Alberta Hannum (SIGNED by illustrator Beatien Yazz) Publisher: Viking (1961) Description:Charming story of an Navaho (Navajo) Indian Trading trading post prior to World War II. The book is illustrated by a child, Beatien Yazz, who went on to become a very famous artist. The illustrations are magnificent. This is a beautiful copy signed by the illustrator in a very nice dustjacket. the book appears to be barely read or unread. Review From Goodreads:Spin a Silver Dollar is about a trading post on the Arizona part of Navajo reservation in the 1930s. It tells about an Anglo couple, the Lippincotts, who bought and ran the Wide Ruins trading post in Arizona for four years. But the story is really about the self taught naturally talented Navajo Artist Beatien Yazz. Bill and Sallie Lippincott noticed a small boy who was carving images on rocks and gave him some paper crayons and watercolors. Navajo people do not reveal their real name to anyone. They all have a name they are known by, Beatien Yazz means Little No Shirt and he also was called Jimmy at school. The book is illustrated with a number of Little No Shirt's paintings. The author, Alberta Hannum, wrote about the Navajo without the condescension seen in so much writings about native people from that time. The book was first published in 1946. The story ends with the Lippincotts leaving the reservation for World War II service. The book does not mention that Beatien Yazz grew up to be one of the best known Native Artists and lived to a great old age. As far back as I can remember this book was always in my parents house. My mother loved the book and on a trip to the Southwest desert she located and bought a painting by Yazz. I've had this book since my mother's death and now I finally read it myself. I see why she treasured it. The title Spin a Silver Dollar has little to do with the story. In one brief instance a young Navajo man came in the trading post and spun a silver dollar on the trading post countertop. Original 1945 Review from Chicago Tribune“SPIN A SILVER DOLLAR,” by Alberta Hannum, VikingReviewed by Will Davidson If only for the full color reproductions of the paintings by an amazing Indian boy, Beatien Yazz, Mrs. Hannum’s report of four years at an Indian trading post would be a book of the year, but the boy'spaintings also serve as illustrations for the story, in which he plays a prominent role, and that story is charmingly told. Mrs. Hannum writes warmly about the experience of Bill and Sally Lippincott in buying an old trading post at Wide Ruins, on the Navaho Indian reservation in north-eastern Arizona, They were fresh out of the University of Chicago and had spent the summer doing anthropological work in Canon de Chelly. There they had begun their education in the irresistible appeal of the Arizona Indian country and in the equally magnetic effect of the Navaho personality and custom. At Wide Ruins the Lippincotts were responsible for two major contributions to art—a revival of theold, beautiful ways of weaving rugs, and the development of the almost miraculous talent of Little No Shirt, as Beatlen Yazz was known. They discovered his talent by accident, encouraged it by wise and patient understanding, When the war ended their four year stay in paradise Beatien Yazz had become something of ai celebrity, and had achieved an awareness of art that augured well for his future. His present is beautifully demonstrated in the magnificent color illustrations. Mrs. Hannum has written quietly and understandingly, and she extracts in full measure the inherent beauty of Arizona and of the Indian culture. From the dj flapAlberta Hannum lives with her husband and their two daughters in Moundsville, West Virginia. Spin a Silver Dollar is the result of a visit to the trading post at Wide Ruins, which her friends, theLippincotts, had taken over. When Collier’s published an article called “Little No Shirt,” about the young painter whose story she develops further in her new book, they received an unprecedentedamount of fan mail. She has written many other magazine stories, and three novels, Thursday April, The Hills Step Lightly, and The Gods and One. A work more closely akin to this, and one for which she received wide praise, was her chapter on “The Mountain People” in the distinguished American folklore anthology, The Great Smokies and The Blue Ridge. About Beatien YazzBeatien Yazz (May 29, 1929 – June 20, 2021), also called Jimmy Toddy, was a Navajo American painter and teacher born near Wide Ruins, Arizona. He exhibited his work around the world and is known for his paintings of animals and people and for his children's book illustrations. Hoska Ye Ta Das Woot was born to Joe and Desbah Toddy on the Navajo Reservation near Wide Ruins, Arizona. He often went by his English-language name Jimmy Toddy, as well as by variations of Bea Etin Yazz ("Little No Shirt" in Navajo). As a young child, he colored with crayons and enjoyed making art. Bill and Sallie Lippincott, who ran the Wide Ruins Trading Post, recognized his talent and encouraged his art. He exhibited for the first time at age 10, with his work shown at a museum in Springfield, Illinois. Yazz attended the Wide Ruins Day School, followed by two years at the Santa Fe Indian School. Then he studied for three years at Fort Wingate Indian School and one year at the Sherman Indian High School. During World War II, Yazz lied about his age in order to serve in the United States Marine Corps as a Code talker, utilizing his knowledge of the Navajo language. When he returned to the reservation after the war, he dedicated himself to art. In the late 1940s he received a scholarship to study under painter Yasuo Kuniyoshi as part of a summer program at Mills College. During this program, he was able to paint with oil paint from a live model. Art careerThough Yazz worked for a time as a police officer in Fort Defiance, Arizona and as an art teacher at Stewart Indian School in Carson City, Nevada, he dedicated most of his adult life to creating art full time. Yazz painted subjects familiar to him in colorful Flatstyle with minimal backgrounds. He often used casein paint for his works. His paintings "record the natural movement of light and air with powerful drama." Yazz earned acclaim with collectors by the 1950s. Alberta Hannum wrote two popular books about his life, including illustrations by Yazz. Spin a Silver Dollar: The Story of a Desert Trading-post (Viking Press, 1945) told of his early life meeting the Lippencotts, and its sequel Paint the Wind (1958) continued Yazz's story as a young adult. Spin a Silver Dollar was condensed by Reader's Digest and was presented on Cavalcade of America. In addition to exhibiting and selling paintings, Yazz also created works on commission. He created some tiles for Gila Pottery, designed fabric on commission for Tumble-weed Prints, and had his work reproduced as greeting cards for a number of companies. Probably his most famous painting was an untitled one that art director Gary Burden found at a yard sale for 25 cents and later used for the front sleeve of The Eagles' 1974 album On The Border. By the 1970s, Yazz had developed severe eye problems and deteriorating eyesight. A Navajo Medicine man told him this was punishment for painting sacred Navajo figures. Without treatment, his eyes never improved, and Yazz was not able to paint past 1991. In early 1983, Yazz worked with Sallie Wagner (formerly Sallie Lippincott) and J.J. Brody to publish Yazz: Navajo Painter, which told his life story and included a number of illustrations. Some of his works have been in the permanent collection of institutions including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Gilcrease Museum, the Logan Museum of Anthropology, the Museum of New Mexico, the Philbrook Museum of Art, and the Southwest Museum of the American Indian Yazz died on June 20, 2021, at the age of 92 Condition: Book is fine. We may upgrade your package at our discretion to USPS Ground Advantage. Package will be shipped within 4 business days after payment - usually faster. The USPS can be notoriously slow, it could take 2-3 weeks for delivery. Please take that into account when leaving feedback, that we will ship quickly, but the USPS can take a long time to deliver, and we have no control over delivery time. Why Shipping Costs Are What They Are: eBay users may note that postal rates increased AGAIN on July 14, 2024. That's EIGHT price hikes in 4 years. This was the largest single price increase ever: 10% on media mail. USPS shipping is getting expensive, but eBay also charges sellers 15% on the shipping cost (+ the taxes), in addition to the actual package shipping cost. That fact and the USPS business model has made shipping prices rise quite a bit since 2019. In 2019 a one pound package sent via media mail cost $2.75. Today it is 68% more to send the same package. This is all part of the bi-annual price increases starting in 2020 & the misguided USPS 10 Year Plan - “Delivering For America,” implemented in 2021 which twice per year, every year until 2030 will keep increasing rates, while the USPS continues to lose billions of dollars. Combined Shipping if you Buy or Win Multiple Auctions Multiple book/media auction wins will qualify for combined shipping when possible. Do not pay until auctions you are bidding on are complete. Email to let us know that you will be bidding or have won more than one item. A revised combined invoice will then be sent after you tell us you are done bidding. Otherwise, if you pay before all auctions are complete or pay separately - combined shipping is not available. Sales Tax: If your state has sales tax, it is collected by eBay & then paid to your state tax authority. Sellers do not make money from this but are charged a percentage by eBay on the total sale including tax – insane, but true. Returns No returns. We describe all items conservatively. However, If there is a problem, message us through eBay messages to let us know what the issue is before contacting eBay or initiating a return or leaving feedback and we will work it out. We want satisfied customers. Feedback: After you receive your item and are satisfied, please leave positive feedback and after you do we will reciprocate. Questions There’s no such thing as a stupid question. Please ask any and all questions before bidding. Photos & Descriptions Photos are of the actual item depicted and are part of the description, please view them all.
