Description: You are bidding on a very rare original antique engraving from an 1870s French illustrated journal. It depicts a beautiful flat-coated retriever dog, identified as a black setter. (I have another print from this series of the Gordon setter, and this breed is listed separately, so I believe it to be an early flat-coated retriever.)Most interesting is that the picture is surrounded by text on the breed as they were a century and a half ago. The article is in French, but free online translation programs makes translations easy. It is described as smaller than the Irish setter, but larger than the old French Spaniel. The caption reads: Le setter Anglais Noirwhich roughly translates to: The black setterIt is very large (folio size), measuring approximately 10.5 x 14.5 inches (26.5 x 36.5 cm). The picture area is about 7 x 5.5 inches (18 x 14 cm), with a French caption below and text above it. The text could easily be trimmed before framing, or hidden under a window mat. The page is in excellent condition for its age. There is text/photos on the back of the print. See scan for an accurate view of the condition. This print will come with a Certificate of Authenticity.
