He often uses his collections of Native American and Early American artifacts in his paintings. His figurative work, whether animals or people, tell a story. Don began his art later in life. He always enjoyed drawing, incorporating it into his presentations and working with children and adults throughout his life. He began learning oil painting from artists he admired some 25 years ago. Modern day artists he particularly admires are: Nancy Bush, Michael Workman, Douglas Fryer, Dennis Sheehan, and Russel Chatham. Of late he has gained from workshops with Guy Morrow and Linda Glover Gooch. Donald has long taken inspiration from early artists too. The Hudson River School, notably George Inness, along with several others from that period, were a strong influence in his work. He also loves the early Dutch and the way they depicted everyday life in their paintings. Whether in plein air or painting in the studio, Don enjoys the process of art and talking to people about it. He encourages others to "Follow Their Bliss" as Joseph Campbell said believing there is art in all of us and its a life worth following. Donald considers himself a coach, bringing out the best of art in others. You can find Donald's work in Helotes Gallery, located in the historic Old Town of Helotes, Texas. Don is a founding partner of the gallery. His work can be found in Fredericksburg, Texas in Grasshopper & Wild Honey. He is a member of OPA, the Coppini Academy, SA Art League and Museum, and AIS.
