Excellent condition with no visible defects (never framed or displayed). In May 2008, Donald Sultan completed a colorful exciting new project, 'Wall Flowers', an artist book containing 35 screen prints, in an edition of 190. The work took about 18 months to create. Sultan spent 3 weeks in 2007 in the print workshop of Jacob and Monique Har-El in Jaffa, preparing the 35 flower images, which form the artist book 'Wall Flowers'. He combined his visits with travel to the Negev Desert, Jerusalem, the Galilee and also to Petra in Jordan. 'Wall Flowers' features multiple images, each of a different kind of flower, in varying colors and compositions, set against a white background. They are bold and delicate, "gestural, varied, unattached, and erratic". Poetic in their simplicity, the Wall Flowers call to mind the diverse associations that flowers have in our lives—they represent life, honor death, are given in times of happiness, sadness, and provide aesthetic pleasure. In addition to being symbols of so much humanity, artists have painted flowers to explore color, form, texture, and composition for centuries. "These images are systematic results of brush, color, and paper," says Sultan. The works are as much about flowers as they are about painting. "I chose ‘flowers’ because flowers can really be anything…these are an excuse for repetition and a use of color as though hung on an object. They have been described as paintings of flowers by someone who has only heard there was once something called flowers, but has never seen them." Born in 1951, Donald Sultan was one of the most significant artists to emerge in the 1980's. Sultan uses traditional subject matter such as the landscape, cityscape and still life to create works that are bold and new. His pictures make strong, immediate visual statements. Often his colors, shapes and patterns contain ambiguity, where a lemon could be a person's eye or street lamps and smokestacks could look like the long stems of flowers. A highly collected artist, Sultan received his MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1975. He currently lives in New York.
