In fresh form, beaver castoreum is a yellowish-brown plastic substance, in dry form it is a brown, easily grinded mass. Thre are two types of the castoreum: castoreum sibericum and castoreum canadense. Castoreum sibericum, also known as dried musk glands of european beaver, contain much more active ingredients so it is more expensive. The castoreum contains aromatic aldehyde muscone, salicine, steroid substances, benzylic alcohol, borneol, p-ethylphenol, acetophenone, benzoic, cinnamic, succinic acids, phenol – in total more than 40 active components.
