Description: ETHAN FROME One of Edith Wharton's most celebrated works, published by Scribners in 1911. This copy is from the first printing, first state, with gilt top text edge and the word "wearily" in unbroken type on page 135 - one of only 2500 copies. Additionally this copy features an original clipped signature of the author, neatly affixed to the first page. Any signed item by Wharton is an true rarity. The book it is reasonably good condition for its 120 years. The covers show fairly minor general handling as seen in the photos. The binding is somewhat rolled, as well as cracked at both endpapers; no loose pages. The text has a number of corner creases and scattered small stains. A small bruise to the top text edge has left small tears to half a dozen leaves. Not an ideal copy, but still a true first of an American classic, made even more valuable by the rare signature. Hardcover, 5" X 7.5", ii + 195 pages plus a 4-page catalog of Wharton's books. Ships promptly & securely.
