Description: Essex House Press First Essex House Press edition, this being number 300 of only 750 copies. C. R. Ashbee (1863-1942) and Laurence Hodson (1864-1933) founded the press one year after William Morris's death in 1896 in order "to keep living the traditions of good printing that William Morris had revived." They hired the Kelmscott Press's former pressman Stephen Mowlem and compositors John Tippett and Thomas Binning. This book, the press's third, is "charming to read and bravely set in the usual size of Caslon with a smaller version of Ashbee's initial letters." Original stiff vellum, spine lettered in black, yapp edges. Woodcut frontispiece, with tissue guard, by Reginald Savage. Text printed in red and black in Caslon type. Complete with custom slipcase, which has kept the vellum fairly fresh. Most pages uncut and unread. Therer are some notations to the inner front cover (book otherwise free of any) and some fading to title. Very good copy of a wonderful piece of fine press work.
