Rappelé en son pays, il abandonne son projet d'édition. Charles Pinot Duclos concourt alors aux côtés de Caylus, Voisenon et Surgères pour composer une nouvelle inspirée des dix dessins. Son conte Acajou et Zirphile aurait été jugé le meilleur et publié avec les gravures en 1744, inspirant dès cette même année à Charles-Simon Favart un opéra-comique promis à un grand succès. Complexe, un tantinet licencieuse, l'histoire met en scène un mauvais génie et une méchante fée en rébellion, décidés à entraver les premiers émois amoureux de deux jouvenceaux.
