Description: This is a very nice and large, 8.5" long, Sclerocephalus fossil in a rock matrix. Sclerocephalus were a carnivorous temnospondyl amphibian species that lived during the Permian Period around 290 million years ago. They were xlarge salamander-like amphibians that could reach up to 5 feet in length. The fossils locality was Rheinland-Pflaz, Germany making this specimen ultra rare since that site has been closed to collecting since the 1980's. The fossil displays details of the amphibian’s skeleton with black surrounding matter which is carbonized skin rather than an impression. This is the actual soft tissue that managed to fossilize. The matrix measures 12.125" x 7.25" x .625" thick (approximate) and weighs 3.3 lbs. The fossil measures 8.5" long. The matrix shows signs of repair with areas being held together by glue. The back of the fossil has been sealed for stability and has some remains of stuck papertowel. The fossil is in great condition and comes with a Riker display box. Curating for an item that is significant to history is very honorable. Historical items need curators, making us part of their preservation process. Authentic or Fabricated or Both Many commercially acquired fossil specimens will often have incorrect (accidentally or deliberately) locality labels. Many of them are mosaics, made from several specimens or they're heavily restored. We have several specimens in various degrees of completeness and fabricated reconstruction, along with many great specimens that are entirely or largely untouched. Each fossil listed has been thoroughly inspected and researched to provide you with a detailed description. Any concerns, uncertainty, or reconstruction areas will be noted in the description.
