Film 1: Warning Red (1956) B&W Runtime 13 minutes This film was made with the premise that the government will be there to help you. A typical American guy is coming home from work when there is a nuclear attack. He spends much of the rest of the film trying to help others as well as locate his family. The acting is generally good and some decent information is given. Film Release Date: 1956 Film Entered the Public Domain: 1985 Film 2: Public Shelter Living: The Story of Shelter 104 (1964) B&W Runtime 29 minutes. Public Shelter Living begins with shelter manager Bob and his assistant, a chirpy blonde, counting people coming into a public Fallout Shelter to avoid the off-camera atomic attack. The thirty-minute black and white movie concerns the challenges of living in a shelter "for as long as we have to." At one point Shelter Manager Bob tells everyone "That it won't be any picnic in here. There's going to be a certain amount of discomfort for all of us." He then urges his captive audience to "sit down, remain calm and continue filling out those forms that were handed to you." Beatnik malcontent Mr. McCann is having none of it. The primary lesson of the film seems to be targeted at potential shelter managers: Don't let stoned beatniks wander into your shelter after the big one drops. You might live to regret it! Film Release Date: 1964 Film Entered the Public Domain: 1993 Film 3: Flash of Darkness (1955) B&W Runtime 24 minutes This "what-if" episode of Medic imagines what would happen in the event of a nuclear strike on Los Angeles. Dr. Styner and his colleagues are at a warehouse outside the city for a training session, but must try to make their way back to the devastated city after the nuclear attack. Along the way they try to treat and save as many injured and radiation-poisoned patients as they can with what little medicine they have and are forced by circumstances to decide which patients can be saved--and which ones they'll have to let die.This episode is from 1954 and it is surprisingly grim - especially for the times! Civil Defense is prominent, & CONELRAD radio keeps them informed.If you grew up during the Cold War, still spooky. Release Date: 1955Entered the Public Domain: 1984 Film 4: Town of the Times (1963) COLOR Runtime 24 minutes Ralph Meeker stars in this docudrama which attempts to convince small towns across middle America to prepare for nuclear holocaust. Release Date: 1963Entered the Public Domain: 1982 Film 5: Target You (1953) B&W Runtime 8 minutes This early civil defense film is essentially a government pamphlet come to life. It features a lot of bizarre family and survival orientated graphics with a stern narrator reciting the facts of preparedness. It is a visual feast for post-modern eyes.
