Description: This is a visually striking and well done Fine Antique Old Art Deco WPA Modern Portrait Oil Painting on Canvas, reminiscent of Tamara De Lempicka's (1894 - 1980) magnificent Art Deco portraits of the 1930's. This piece depicts the portrait of a stoic and mysterious gentleman, exuding masculinity. He displays short cropped dark hair, a piercing gaze, and a long moustache. He wears a mustard-colored shirt, and a dark suit jacket, and stares out laconically off to the right of the viewer's gaze. Signed and dated in the lower right corner: "FJ Spreth 1933." The signature and date are quite faded, but still legible, especially under the right indoor lighting or in outdoor sunlight. I could not find any information on this talented painter, but perhaps you know more about them or their work? Approximately 17 1/2 x 21 1/4 inches (including frame.) Actual artwork is approximately 14 1/8 x 18 1/8 inches. Very good condition for nearly a century of age and storage, with moderate gilding loss, scuffing, and edge wear to the original antique gilded wood frame. Additionally, there are some small speckles of soiling to the painted surface (please see photos.) Acquired in Los Angeles County, California.
