Description: Nice polished contemporary full red calf leather binding with intricate stamped and gilted patterns, six lines of complicated gilt rules, etc etc. Spine also impressively stamped and gilted, with stamped lyre patterns in ornamental compartments between raised bands, with date at bottom. Cover edges wonderfully gilted with patterns that continue in the inner dentilles. All page edges gilt. The work of this contemporary binder was phenomenal, and has held up incredibly well over the centuries. Book: London: Rivington, Payne, Walker, et al, 1811. 6 1/2 x 4 inches: pp. xxxiv, 216. Foxing to endpapers and frontis of Beattie. Beattie [1735-1803] was a Scottish poet who was best known for his popular "Essay on the Nature and Immutability of Truth" and his poem "The Minstrel" which was first published in 1771, and is known for its fine descriptive writing. Beattie gained praise from Samuel Johnson. With the sporting bookplate (Fox & duck hunting, & fishing designs), of John Sherwin, Jr. (designed by S. B. Hill, 1928, engraved by A. J. Downey), on the front paste-down.
