We purchase and appraise estates, and are always buying collections. ITEM DESCRIPTION DescriptionUp for your consideration is a pair of antique Chinese shelves, each featuring three lions. The shelved are made of a black lacquered wood, with slightly raised details, so they could be some form of papier mache. The shelves were further hand-painted in gold, black, white, and red. The shelves measure 14" tall x 14.5" wide. These came from an estate of tea collectors/connoisseurs, and they displayed 12" in diameter wrapped tea cakes on these for the last several decades. The shelves are strong, and unwarped, but I would put a maximum to 8 lbs. on each shelf for long term storage. The collectors believe that these were export items, made specifically to display tea, but I cannot confirm that. The size and construction is consistent with that use. ConditionVery Good Condition. One of the shelves has a scratch running across the back plate, with some related minor paint loss. Also, one of the lions has some repainted features. The shelves have other potential minor restorations/touch-ups. I tried to provide pictures of everything. On the wall, they present beautifully.
