Description: Up for Bid: A flask of an outcross of two unrelated clones of Cattleya schroederae, both of which have subtle shading. The blooming images are of the parents. The auction flask is shown in the images with the tape measure. It is growing in a 16 oz plastic container. [5842] Contents: Approximately 25 seedlings that are ready to come out of flask. The Species: I really love this species. At its best this species has beautiful full flowers that are 4 to 5” across and born with 2 to 4 per inflorescence. It is rightly noted for its "heavenly fragrance." The plants can be up to 19" tall, but most of mine are more in the 12 to 14" range. They are found in the central portion of the Eastern Cordillera of the Andes in Colombia at an elevation of 4600 to 5250 ft. The sun is strongest in the winter in the habitat and the rainfall is decreased at this time but not a hard, dry rest. Moderate temperatures with nights in the upper 50F's at night and upper 70F's during the day year round suit it well.Culture: It was suggested to me to use a shallow pot or open basket so the roots could dry quickly. I have tried that as well as in regularly proportioned plastic pots or baskets and, under my conditions, the regular depth pot does better. It needs a well drained medium, moderately bright to bright light (a bit less than some Cattelya species) with lots of water and fertilizer in the growing season. Mine plants of this get 56F minimum winter nights with nights in the summer about 5F higher. Daytime highs are pretty consistent all year and rarely go above 82F. Repot when the new growth is beginning and before the medium begins to break down. To see more orchids from mostlyspecies (Marni Turkel) click: More Orchids. Ask Before Bidding if you have any questions about this plant. Your plant will be packed very carefully, but I cannot guarantee that flowers or spikes will be intact on receipt. I want my customers to be happy, so if there is a problem contact me immediately, I will do my very best to see that it is corrected. About this flask: I take great pride in producing flasks with strong seedlings that are ready to come out of flask and have a very good survival rate. The survival of these seedlings is dependent on the conditions where they will be growing and the skill of the grower. If you are new to deflasking seedlings (or just want to see how I do it) you may want to take a look at my webpage with suggestions for taking seedlings out of flask. If you want to see it, just do a search for the phrase “deflasking suggestions.Shipping seedlings: After a bit of experience shipping flasks, I have decided that deflasking before shipping is probably the safest for the plants. I will shake off most of the medium, treat them with beneficial microbes and fungicide and put them in a zip bag. If your prefer to have them shipped in flask you must let me know that. Whether they are in flask or bagged, you should be prepared to pot them up shortly after receiving.Shipping & Handling Charge: It is the buyer’s responsibility to check the weather in the delivery area and let me know if special precautions are necessary.Packing and shipping for the first plant or flask is US $13.95; additional plants or flasks in the same shipment are only $1.50 each. I usually ship on Monday/Tuesday or Saturday after receipt of payment. The plants need to be dry to ship safely and that can take several days. I most often ship USPS, but can use FedEx 2nd Day Air if you prefer. There may be an extra charge for FedEx.Your item will be shipped with a tracking number so you can see its progress. Ebay has changed its policy and I am penalized if I don’t ship your purchase within 5 days of payment. You can pay me through PayPal and I can hold your shipment until you are ready. Shipping plants to Hawaii requires that you have an import permit and pay the Phytosanotary certificate/handling charges ($20).International shipping is not available.Weather: I live in a mild climate area, so I am able to ship most any time. Shipping with a heat pack is extra work for me and I won't recommend it unless I think you really need it. IF your daytime temperatures are below 40F a heat pack may or may not be advisable and we should discuss. If your daytime temperatures are below 32F I don't usually recommend shipping even with a heat pack. If your package will be sitting outside in a mailbox or on a porch after delivery that needs to be taken in to consideration. If you have concerns about the weather in your area, I am happy to work with you to be sure that the order arrives safely by having it held for pick up at your local post office, by timing of shipment and/or heat pack from my Ebay listings or by using USPS Express or FedEx Next Day or Second Day Air shipping for an adjusted price.
