William Shakespeare, who lived from 1564 – 1616, was an English poet, playwright, and actor, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's greatest dramatist. He is often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon." Shakespeare was born and reared in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire. At the age of 18, he married Anne Hathaway, with whom he had three children: Susanna and twins Hamnet and Judith. Sometime between 1585 and 1592, he began a successful career in London as an actor, writer, and part-owner of a playing company called the Lord Chamberlain's Men. In 1600, the impending death of Elizabeth had thrown England into turmoil; Shakespeare's patron, the Earl of Southhampton, was arrested for treason, and he himself may have been under suspicion for the political content of Richard II; he had lost his only son, and London theatres were closing. It was in the aftermath of these events that OTHELLO was written, followed by KING LEAR and MACBETH. Unlike Greek tragedy, with its emphasis on man's powerlessness in the face of destiny, these plays turn on the transcendence of Fate through courage. The Great Tragedies brought Shakespeare to the zenith of his poetic power. At age 49---around 1613--- he retired to Stratford, where he died three years later, April 23, 1616. This volume includes: "Macbeth," "Hamlet, Prince of Denmark," "Othello, the Moor of Venice," "Romeo and Juliet," "King Lear," and "Julius Caesar." 639 pages. I offer Combined shipping.
