Description: 1862 sterling silver centerpiece bowl made by Gale & Son in 1862 , the year when Dominick & Haff purchased the firm, with ornate handles and a classical Greek-styled beaded frieze with geometric pattern around the rim and at the base. It measures 14 1/4'' in length from handle to handle by 8 3/4'' in width by 4'' in height, weighs 19.2 ozt, and bears hallmarks and an engraved monogram as shown. Dominick & Haff was an American silver manufacturer based in New York City. It was co-founded by Henry Blanchard Dominick and Leroy B. Haff in 1862 after they gained control over the firm of William Gale, which explains why this piece has hallmarks of William Gale and Dominick & Haff. It was incorporated in 1889, and it was sold to Reed & Barton in 1928. The firm designed pots, mugs, centerpieces, spoons, tea sets and kettles. Examples can be seen at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, Cooper Hewitt, the Indianapolis Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Rhode Island School of Design Museum.
