Description: Vintage Grand Army of the Republic veteran's medal. This was a medal given to union members who fought in the Civil War. The medal has a serial number on it; R23824. The metal part has some slight copper corrosion. I don't believe the ribbon is original, but it looks like it was replaced many, many years ago (the last person who could have worn one of these died in 1956). This is a Type V medal and Type V could have been made 1886-1949, the last year there was a commander. However, many people believe no badges were made after 1920. Most GAR posts had closed by 1930. This serial number on a Type V medal puts the medal being issued in either 1888, 1901, 1929, 1937, 1939, or 1948. Since the majority of eligible people joined 1900 or earlier, it's likely this medal was issued 1888 or 1901. By 1929, the men who served would have been in their late 60's or older, so not many new members joining. Because of this, if they were issued after 1920, the serial number would have been very low, not 23824, because it restarted at 1 each year. Another interesting fact about these medals are that they are made from an alloy of 20% copper, 5% zinc, and 75% gunmetal from captured Confederate cannons. When you hold one, you actually are holding a piece of an old Confederate weapon!
