Description: By the start of 1781, Wakefield Plantation ( birthplace of George Washington) was destroyed by fire and William Augustine Washington, nephew of George and then heir to Wakefield, moved his family to Blenheim Plantation, a house located a mile inland from the Potomac River. He then started to build Haywood Plantation with- according to family tradition- bricks from Wakefield and was residing there by 1790. Today, due to coastal erosion, nothing remains of Haywood except a debris field on the bottom of the Potomac River. Over 12 years, I’ve been able to salvage several dozen. Right now 4 are still available with descriptive brass plate.
