Description: Gladiolus tristis Gladiolus tristis is a beautiful and very fragrant species from a winter rainfall region of South Africa. Growing to 3' feet tall, this species has three leaves per bulb, and offers 2-11 flowers per upright flower stem. The 3" flowers are creamy white, with brown and golden yellow shading, and brown to purple on the reverse, with an intoxicating and spicy fragrance that is more noticeable at night. This widespread species grows in full sun, in soils that vary from sandstone to clay and, regardless of location, is always seasonally wet. The plants can gradually form dense colonies; creating quite a show when in bloom. An easy-going species, Gladiolus tristis is great for beginners. Hardy USDA Zones 8 and above. This offering is for 12 small "seed bulbs" (as seen in the last photo), shipped bareroot, and ready for immediate planting. Detailed directions are included. I have been growing rare and exotic plants for nearly 50 years, and take great pride in what I grow and ship. All photos are of plants in my own garden and collection (unless stated otherwise).
