Specimen weight: 1.546 Gram - 23.9 Grains Size: 11.5X11.1X10.1 mm Here, a predominantly quartz rock harbors high-purity gold. Both ends show a nice filling of oro. It's origin - a historic hard-rock mine in eastern Australia, the Gympie-Eldorado located in Queensland. Gold ores mined around the globe are diverse mineralogically. A small splatter of some black secondary mineral can be seen alternating with the quartz. My source tells me this is from the wall rock. Once you enter the metallurgical realm of gold, there's no telling what a person may find. There's no need for a pocket lens to see the gold locked inside this fingernail-sized pebble. If you're pondering it's true nature, rest assured my specimens and cabs contain VG (visible gold) and it is naturally-occurring. I don't deal in low grade ores, period. Throughout the entire world, whether North America, South America, Canada, Asia, Africa, Europe, Australia, the Philippines, and many other regions, major gold deposits have been found within a suite of rocks referred to as greenstones. The name greenstone refers to the color of the rock acquired during metamorphism: greenschist facies metamorphism. In the state of California, the Mother Lode and Alleghany mining districts lie within a greenstone belt which contains world-class gold deposits, one of which is the Sixteen to One vein system. With past production of more than 31 metric tons of gold, it's renowned for it's extremely high-grade pockets. Our understanding of how this deposit formed has evolved over the past 85 years. A process called carbonate metasomatism forms ribbon quartz veins along en echelon faults secondary to the crustal suture known as the Melones fault. These secondary veins (the Sixteen to One) form by replacement as aqueous fluids ascending through cracks in the earth’s crust removing accessory cations from wall rock minerals along the way. The Melones fault is the remnant of a compressive or transpressional environment common to convergent plate margins. This fault marks the boundary along which oceanic crustal rock is emplaced against the continent. The fracture system alongside the quartz veins is an expression of the forces and motion at this crustal suture. The Alleghany fracture system originates at the Melones fault. This is the conduit for a large volume of fluid which created the vein system. The volume of fluid is calculated with reasonable accuracy since the fluid composition is known from fluid inclusion chemistry. The amount of end product, or quartz, is known from mining.
